The facemask penalty on 49ers tight end George Kittle was costly but perhaps necessary.

New Orleans Saints safety Marcus Williams was one of three players from the game to get fined by the NFL. San Francisco cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon and New Orleans safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson were also fined.

When Williams grabbed on and didn’t let go of Kittle’s facemask in the closing minutes of Sunday’s game, it was entirely possible that was the only way Kittle was going to be tackled.

But the penalty added 15 yards to the end of Kittle’s 39-yard catch-and-run after his reception of Jimmy Garoppolo’s pass. The penalty set up Robbie Gould’s 30-yard field goal as time expired in the 49ers’ 48-46 victory over the Saints.

The play proved to be even more costly for Williams, whom the league on Saturday fined $10,527 for the facemask penalty.

Witherspoon was fined $28,075 for his hit on Saints tight end Jared Cook on a play that was ruled a touchdown. Cook was credited with a 26-yard touchdown catch, and Witherspoon was penalized for an unnecessary hit to the neck and head area. Cook was diagnosed with a concussion.

Gardner-Johnson was fined $28,075 for a hit to the head-and-neck area on 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk in the fourth quarter.

The Tennessee Titans were looking to drive down the field late in the fourth quarter against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

This is when Ryan Tannehill hit Kalif Raymond on what would have been a huge first-down gain in a game that stood at 31-28 in favor of the Saints.

Unfortunately for the Titans, Raymond fumbled after an obviously illegal hit on Saints defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

That’s some horrible stuff right there. How in the world did officials miss this? It was a game-changing missed call.

It could also have wide-ranging implications in both the AFC and NFC Playoff races. Tennessee is trying to edge out the Pittsburgh Steelers for the final wild card spot in the AFC.

Meanwhile, New Orleans is battling with multiple teams for home-field advantage throughout the NFC Playoffs.

Eli Apple Jersey

The New Orleans Saints have numerous players with expiring contracts, and they cannot pay them all. But, to keep their secondary in tack, it should be safety Vonn Bell seeing a payday not cornerback Eli Apple.

The Saints will have several debates in their front office. Players like A.J. Klein, Drew Brees, Vonn Bell, Eli Apple, and others need to be paid. They must also realize that they are without a second-round pick to fill a potential void that’s created.

Who will they re-sign and who will they let go? On a franchise of their caliber, they’ll have the benefit of the doubt with these quality veterans, but their money is still limited. Let’s assume the battle for the secondary is between Bell and Apple.

You sign Vonn Bell; he’s been an improved and dominant safety this season.

The 5-foot-11, fourth-year pro will have career highs across the board with even a mediocre performance on Sunday.

Bell has taken a step forward this season. He has 86 tackles, 63 solo. What’s been most impactful is the two forced fumbles and five fumble recovers the former Ohio State star has been able to secure.

Apple, on the other hand, has been far from dominant this season. On the side opposite of Marshon Lattimore, Apple has been lit up multiple times. It seemed right from the get-go in Week 1 he was the target of opposing offensive coordinators.

In an important Week 14 loss, Apple posted Pro Football Focus’ worst rating among Saints.

Apple had to be better, but he was getting absolutely shredded by players like Deebo Samuel. The arrival of Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, although he had two game-changing third-and-long flags last week, should also take down the value of Apple.

Outside of four snaps, Marcus Williams and Vonn Bell have played every defensive snap for the Saints. They are the crux of this defense, and the front office should feel the same way.

The Saints had a longer than usual injury report this week and have five players that are out for Monday night’s contest against the Colts.

LB Kiko Alonso, S Vonn Bell, G Andrus Peat along with CBs Patrick Robinson and Johnson Bademosi will not play. Bademosi is a new addition to the injury report. He mainly contributes on special teams and was listed with a foot injury for the first time on Saturday.

Meanwhile, LT Terron Armstead, DE Cam Jordan, TE Jared Cook, LB A.J. Klein, FB Zach Line and C/G Will Clapp all have no injury designation, which signals they are all good to go. Having Line’s blocking ability back is a big boost for the run game. He’s missed the past 3 games due to an issue with his knee.

Drew Brees remained a full participant at practice. There was some concern after the QB’s name showed up with a right elbow issue on Friday.

“We had to list it, because he has a band on his elbow,” explained head coach Sean Payton. “But, I think he’ll be fine.”

Brees got dinged up on the Saints final scoring drive against the 49ers. He looks to take over another one of Payton Manning’s records as he is 2 TD passes away from tying him for most in league history. New England’s Tom Brady is also in the mix.

Corner Kenny Moore II is the only players out for Indianapolis. CB Pierre Desir and WR T.Y. Hilton are questionable.

After going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, Shy Tuttle found a home with the New Orleans Saints. Tuttle has become a key player in the defensive line rotation for the Saints — and he made a massive play on Thanksgiving night against the Falcons.

The former Tennessee Volunteer picked off Matt Ryan, but it was what he did next that people will remember. Tuttle unleashed one of the nastiest stiff arms that you will ever see.

Watch this.

Here’s another look. What a BRUTAL moment for Matt Ryan.

Looks like we’ve got another case of a former Tennessee player being better on Sunday (Thursday in this case) than he was on Saturday.

Vinny Curry is not projected to be worth a roster spot based on total fantasy points the rest of the season. His 5 projected fantasy points puts him at #102 behind Nate Orchard and ahead of Ifeadi Odenigbo. He has averaged 2.31 fantasy points in his past 21 games, which is slightly less than our projected per game average. His projected per game average is 2.4 fantasy points. His rank based on avg proj (#104) is worse than his rank based on total fantasy points. Vinny Curry is expected to come up short of this season-to-date’s #93 fantasy position rank.

These projections power SportsLine’s Computer Picks and Fantasy Data. But for contest winning DFS optimal lineups by top experts like Mike McClure visit SportsLine’s new Daily Fantasy Hub.

Vinny Curry is projected for 2.5 fantasy points in week 16 which only ranks him as the #98 projected defensive lineman and not a fantasy relevant player for the week. He is ranked above Antwaun Woods but behind Trey Hendrickson. Week 17 will not be as good based on projected rank (#110). He is projected for 2.4 fantasy points.

The tables below show projected stats (totals and averages) for the rest of the season and upcoming weeks. Also included are actual stats from the current and last season.

The Saints re-signed offensive lineman Michael Ola on Friday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.

They placed tight end Jason Vander Laan on injured reserve in a corresponding move. The Saints added Vander Laan to the injury report Thursday with a head injury.

Ola, 31, played seven games with one start with the Saints in 2018.

He has not had a job this season but has played 39 games with 20 starts in five previous seasons.

Vander Laan signed to the Saints’ practice squad in October as an insurance policy while Jared Cook was out with an ankle injury. He earned a promotion to the 53-player roster Nov. 25.

Vander Laan played in two games with one start. He returned one kickoff for 8 yards.

Vander Laan played 21 offensive snaps and 21 on special teams the past two weeks.

Like many of his teammates and peers across the NFL, New Orleans Saints rookie center Erik McCoy will represent a cause on his feet this Sunday.

The shoes McCoy will wear against the San Francisco 49ers as part of the “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign are somewhat understated, a fairly straightforward mix of white and mottled blue with gold laces. But the message written on them is anything but.

Inscribed in neat block lettering near the ankle is “NOT FOR SALE.” That is a nod to the group McCoy chose to support this week, the International Justice Mission (IJM), a global organization that seeks to end modern-day slavery in forms like sex trafficking or forced labor.

The IJM focuses its efforts in the developing world, partnering with local authorities and law enforcement to rescue victims and reform the systems in those areas that allow these endemic problems to persist.

“Man, that’s a really cool cause,” McCoy said. “They’re doing what a lot of people aren’t, going into the slums of poor countries and trying to pull people out who are victims of slavery.”

It’s an organization several Saints players, past and present, are familiar with. Former Saints tight end Benjamin Watson and current Saints receiver Austin Carr went to the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2018 with IJM.

Carr made a second trip to Guatemala with the organization this past summer with former Saints defensive end Geneo Grissom as part of the IJM’s ‘Team Freedom,’ a coalition of professional athletes who have partnered with the group.

Carr was also set to represent IJM with his cleats this week, but was sent to injured reserve a few weeks ago.

“Joining the Team Freedom group to fight against sex trafficking and human exploitation is an awesome opportunity to love your neighbors as yourself,” Carr told the New Orleans Advocate | Times-Picayune this summer.

McCoy’s fiancée, Bianca Soliz, introduced him to IJM this year after she spoke with Austin and Erica Carr about it. The organization spoke to him, in part, because he has family members who are victims of sexual assault.

McCoy also saw the way his teammates’ visit abroad raised awareness in those countries, seeing a spike in media coverage that brought more eyeballs on the larger issue.

He has not yet been heavily involved in humanitarian efforts, with the lone thing he could think of being a mission trip he took to Haiti when he was a senior at Texas A&M, but it is an area where he is looking to expand personally considering the platform he is afforded as an NFL football player.

“We have an opportunity and experience that a lot of people don’t have,” McCoy said. “And bringing light to issues like this that don’t get a lot of media coverage outside of the local area they’re in, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”

NEW ORLEANS — The left side of the New Orleans Saints’ offensive line took another hit Sunday when standout left tackle Terron Armstead left the game with an ankle injury in the first quarter.

Armstead, a second-team All-Pro last year, was officially ruled out after halftime.

The extent of Armstead’s injury was not immediately known, but he was able to walk off the field under his own power before eventually riding a cart back to the locker room. The Saints have a quick turnaround this week; they play at Atlanta on Thursday night.

The Saints also lost Pro Bowl left guard Andrus Peat earlier this month to a broken forearm, which is expected to sideline him for about six weeks. That’s a double whammy, since Peat often serves as the Saints’ backup left tackle when Armstead is hurt.

Veteran Patrick Omameh filled in for Armstead instead during Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. He was flagged for holding on a fourth-and-1 attempt in the second quarter. But the Saints’ offense has been rolling in the second half while building a 30-18 lead in the third quarter.

Josh Hill Jersey

You probably don’t know who Josh Hill is, even if you’re a diehard golf fan. But you will know him soon enough, because the 15-year-old amateur phenom is about to take the golf world by storm.

On Wednesday, Hill won the Abu Dhabi Amateur Championship, closing out the victory with a birdie on the final hole at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. It’s quite the accomplishment for such a young player, and it comes with benefits. For his win, Hill earned a spot in the Abud Dhabi HSBC Championship on the European Tour in January.

But that’s only half the story. Believe it or not, Hill was already prepping to play a European Tour event next month.

The Dubai-born teenager shot a final-round 62 to win the Al Ain Open on the Mena Tour in late October, becoming the youngest-ever winner of an event recognized by the Official World Golf Ranking. That trumped the previous record-holder, Ryo Ishikawa, who was two months older than Hill when he won the 2007 Munsingwear Open KSB Cup.

Along with the trophy, Hill earned a spot in the European Tour’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic. That event will take place January 23-26, exactly one week after the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, which begins January 16. That means Hill will tee it up in back-to-back premier Euro Tour events before he would be legally allowed to drive in the United States.

Hill is no stranger to making headlines with his golf on the junior and amateur circuits. He won an incredible eight events in three months back in 2018 to win the Emirates Golf Federation Order of Merit.

But professional golf at the elite levels is an entirely different animal. It’s impossible to predict how any young phenom’s game will translate on the top Tours, so we’ll have to wait until January to see how he handles the big stage.
