When the New Orleans Saints scored their second touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, head coach Sean Payton decided to go for two. A personal foul had just been called on 49ers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon for making contact to the head of Saints tight end Jared Cook, who hauled in the touchdown pass from Drew Brees.

Faced with the decision of kicking a PAT from the seven-yard line instead of the 15-yard line or attempting a two-point conversion from the one-yard line instead of the two-yard line, Payton opted for the two-point conversion, but the end-around to QB/RB/WR/TE/punt blocker/general nuisance Taysom Hill was foiled by the 49ers’ defense.

The Saints then led 20-7 instead of 21-7, and that missing point ended up being the difference between a loss and chance to win in overtime. When the Saints scored their final touchdown of the game to make the score 46-45, they had to go for two to stretch the lead to 48-45 in an attempt to make it impossible for the 49ers to win the game on a field goal on the game’s final drive. Had the Saints not gone for two earlier in the game, the Saints would have been down just four points on their final drive, scored a touchdown to make it 47-45, then kicked a PAT to go up 48-45.

Of course, the two-point conversion at the end of the game failed as well, and the 49ers were indeed able to win the game on a last-second field goal. Many fans and commentators questioned Payton’s decision to go for two early on, and Payton said a butcher at Whole Foods even asked him about it.

Payton was less than thrilled.

“I certainly understand fans asking questions,” Payton said on a New Orleans radio show. “I got the guy at freaking Whole Foods asking me about the two-point play. The guy from the meat section. I looked at him and said, ‘Hey, your steaks don’t look too good right now. Worry about your freaking meat.’ It’s driving me crazy.”

To Payton’s credit, he did explain his rationale for going for two.

“It was a play we felt real good with,” he said of the end-around to Hill. “We’re on the one yard line. I’ve always been more conservative and never really looked at that chart until the second half. So it was really more about the penalty and the ability for us to run a play from the one-yard line. The safety lines up on the wrong side of the ball. We send the motion and all of a sudden we’re going into an extra man. But mainly that decision was on the personal foul and getting the ball on the one rather than the two yard line.”

METAIRIE, La. — The defense has been the glue for the New Orleans Saints through much of this season, helping them win games by scores such as 12-10 and 13-6 while Teddy Bridgewater was filling in for Drew Brees at quarterback.

The Saints’ 48-46 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14 was a frightening flashback to the not-so-distant past, when New Orleans had the NFL’s No. 1-ranked offense and No. 32-ranked defense over a 10-year span from 2007 to ’16.

The question now: Was this a blip on the radar? Or is there reason for concern after the Saints’ defense came up so small in the biggest game of the season to date?

“Look, we’ve got some guys nicked up. And I think at linebacker particularly, we’ve gotta get those guys back. At the same time, there were a number of guys that didn’t play well,” Saints coach Sean Payton said after the team was without starting linebackers A.J. Klein and Kiko Alonso. “So as the head coach, you look at the tape, you watch it, you’re disappointed with it in a tough game like that. And you gotta bounce back against the [Indianapolis Colts] here this Monday night.

“But we can’t kid ourselves. We gotta play a lot better. We gotta coach a lot better.”

The most disturbing thing about Sunday’s performance was the way New Orleans’ secondary was sliced and diced by San Francisco’s passing game. That wasn’t an isolated incident.

The Saints have allowed the fourth-most passing yards in the NFL the past four weeks (285.3 per game). That doesn’t include a whopping 13 flags for defensive pass interference or defensive holding in that stretch for a total of 124 yards.

Saints cornerback Eli Apple has had a particularly rough stretch the past two weeks. He was flagged for three pass interference penalties at Atlanta in Week 13. On Sunday, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo picked on him early on his way to 349 passing yards and four touchdown passes. (Receiver Emmanuel Sanders also threw a 35-yard TD pass on a trick play.)

NEW ORLEANS — A family of Saints fans from Mobile, Ala. is desperate for your help to find a missing Drew Brees jersey.

They brought it with them to the home game at the Dome last Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, but it hasn’t been seen since. The jersey belonged to Bobby Harper Jr., an emergency room nurse who passed away in a car accident in January.

The Harper family have been Saint fans and season-ticket holders for years. They had several family traditions they carried out at every home game including wearing the same outfit to each game.

“We all have our game day attire, we don’t change,” said Jennifer Harper. “Same socks, same shoes, same blouse, everything.”

Bobby Harper Jr. stuck out in a crowd at the Dome. He was 6’7” with red hair and a red beard. He always wore his Drew Brees jersey to the games.

“He was on his way to help a coworker who was stranded when he was killed in the car accident,” said his mother, Jennifer Harper.

The shock of his loss hit his family hard. The Saints traditions became part of Bobby’s end-of-life celebrations. They hosted a Saints tailgate at their home for his memorial. Bobby’s ashes are in a Saints urn.

This season, his family has attended games with his old jersey and hung it on his empty seat.

“There’ll be times I hold onto it,” said Jennifer Harper. “I clutch it to my chest, I put it in front of me cheering.”

Jennifer Harper says she remembers packing up the jersey and putting it in her clear plastic bag before leaving the stadium Sunday. When the family got to the car, they realized it was gone.

“I think and assume someone took it out of the bag,” said Bobby Harper Sr. “It was an easy pick, they probably took it for a souvenir.”
